Abstract:

Wells Wallis West (1836-1924) autobiography, Lake Port, California, March 1921-February 1922. Account of childhood in Illinois; overland journey to California (1853) via Ft. Laramie and Salt Lake City; mining near Ione City and at Michigan Bar; Civil War experiences as member of the California One Hundred. With this, copy of printed excerpt regarding West. Also included: Account by Lucy Ann Benson Stottlemyer (1866-1966) regarding the Benson family, especially her father, Anderson Benson (1822-1897), his overland journey to California (1848) and silver mining; and article from The Desert Magazine, November 1950, by Charles A. Benson regarding his father's discovery of the Lost Gunsight Silver Lode in Death Valley (1849).
